FASTag has been made mandatory for all automobiles nationwide. If you haven't purchased FASTag, now is the time to do so. To make toll booth crossings more effective, the government has implemented FASTag. FASTag allows automatic toll deductions throughout the country. Smooth traffic flow on a highway might make your ride more comfortable. For the major issue of long halts at toll plazas, FASTag is the only solution.

What is FASTag?

A FASTag is a sticker tag that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to make electronic toll payments at toll booths. In 2017, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways implemented FASTag in India.

It is posted on your truck's windshield frontglass and allows you to drive on highways without stopping for transactions. You can purchase FASTag via authorized tag issuers or partner banks. You can recharge it online as well as offline as per your need. The minimum recharge value is Rs100.

Your vehicle's registration information is connected to a barcode on your FASTag. As a result, every time your truck or vehicle passes through a toll plaza, the barcode is scanned and the applicable toll fee is withdrawn from your digital FASTag wallet.

New FASTag Rules and Regulations You Should Be Aware Of

Here are the new FASTag rules you should be aware of:

  1. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made it mandatory for all vehicle owners to use FASTag.

  2. If your FASTag does not work at a FASTag toll lane, the toll charges will be doubled. As a result, before entering a toll lane, double-check that the RFID barcode is not damaged and that your FASTag wallet has sufficient balance.

  3. According to the NHAI's new guidelines, the waiting time at toll plazas should not exceed 10 seconds. If the waiting time exceeds 10 seconds, you don't have to pay toll tax.

  4. Double Charges if you don't have a FASTag: If you don't have a FASTag and want to cross a toll plaza, you'll have to pay twice the standard toll rates. Installing a FASTag is therefore recommended if you want to save time and money.

  5. According to The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, you must have third-party insurance. If you want to purchase third-party insurance, you must have a FASTag assigned to your vehicle's registration number. As a result, even if you do not drive on highways, you must install a FASTag.

  6. Your FASTag is valid for five years from the date of purchase, but this can vary by the bank for bank-specific RFID tags. Make sure to recharge the tag on time to keep a sufficient balance.

  7. Vehicle Queue: According to NHAI regulations, vehicle queues at toll plazas should not exceed 100 meters. At a distance of 100 meters from the toll booth, each toll lane will be marked with a yellow line. If your vehicle is stuck in traffic for more than the specified distance, you will be allowed to proceed without paying any tolls.

  8. Only One FASTag is allowed for one vehicle. A FASTag is linked to your vehicle's registration number. As a result, you can only use one FASTag per vehicle. You will be fined if you use the same FASTag for multiple vehicles.

What are the Types of FASTag?

FASTags are classified into two types: bank-specific and bank neutral.

Bank-specific FASTags, which will be issued by 22 selected banks, will require the owner of a private vehicle to provide proof of driver's license and address.

Bank-neutral FASTags will be issued by the NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) and will be able to be directly linked to an existing bank account without the need for any KYC process. The Bank-neutral FASTags can be used to purchase fuel and pay parking fees.

How to buy FASTags?

FASTags are available at all toll booths. The tags are also available at select branches of 22 banks, as well as e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, Airtel apps and mobile wallets such as Paytm.

Nowadays, RFID tags come with new vehicles. To recharge the tag, owners should obtain the tag credentials from the dealership where they purchased the vehicle.

FASTags must be purchased by owners of older vehicles. They must pay an initial purchase fee. The price of the tag varies slightly depending on which bank you purchase from and the type of vehicle. A certain amount will be held in the FASTag account as a security deposit.

What are the documents needed for a FASTag?

Documents required for the Individuals

Documents Required for Public Limited Companies, Private Limited Companies, and Sole Proprietors

Note - All required FASTag documentation must be in the name of the vehicle's owner.

What are the advantages of FASTag for truck users?

To find the nearest point-of-sale location, download My FASTag App, go to www.ihmcl.com, or call the 1033 NH Helpline number. NHAI/IHMCL has developed a UPI recharge facility via the My FASTag App for the recharge facility. FASTag can be recharged by visiting the respective bank's portal and using net banking, credit/debit card, UPI, or other easily accessible payment methods.
