Key Highlights:

Greaves Electric Mobility, known for its electric two and three-wheelers, has announced plans to set up an in-house battery pack assembly line at its Ranipet plant in Tamil Nadu by fiscal year 2027. This move is part of the company’s strategy to improve cost efficiency and supply chain reliability.

Shift Towards In-House Battery Production

The new assembly line at the Ranipet facility will have an annual capacity of 400,000 units and is expected to be commissioned in May 2026, with commercial production beginning in July 2026. The company has allocated Rs 82.9 crore from its proposed Rs 1,000 crore IPO to establish this capability.

Currently, Greaves Electric sources its battery packs from external suppliers, with the battery accounting for a significant portion of manufacturing costs—35-40% for two-wheelers and 54% for electric three-wheelers. The company aims to reduce costs by producing its own batteries, which make up over 25% of its total expenses.

Focus on Advanced Battery Technologies

Greaves Electric is also shifting its electric two-wheelers to LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries, known for their higher thermal resistance and longer life. The company is investing in developing battery packs with alternative technologies to cut costs, reduce charging time, and improve efficiency.

Expansion and Future Plans

The company is also exploring new suppliers for battery cells in South-East Asia, China, and India, though no definitive supply agreements have been made yet. In addition to the battery assembly line, Greaves Electric plans to use Rs 375.3 crore of the IPO proceeds for product and technology development, as well as enhancing its technology center in Bengaluru.

The Ranipet plant, one of Greaves Electric’s three manufacturing facilities, currently produces Ampere electric two-wheelers with an annual capacity of 4.80 lakh units.

CMV360 Says

Greaves Electric's decision to make its own battery packs is a good move. Since batteries are a big part of the cost, making them in-house could help save money and keep prices competitive. Their focus on better battery technology, like LFP batteries, shows they are thinking ahead and trying to improve their products. If this plan works out, it could help Greaves Electric grow and become more independent in the future.
