The company aims to introduce 2-tonne and 3-tonne electric trucks by the end of the year, further strengthening its presence in urban logistics and last-mile delivery.
Key Highlights:
Jupiter Wagons Ltd, based in Kolkata, is well-known for making railway wagons, wagon parts, and commercial vehicle load bodies. The company has now entered the electric vehicle market through its subsidiary, Jupiter Electric Mobility. Recently, they launched their electric small truck, JEM Tez, in Indore, marking their first move into the electric light commercial vehicle (LCV) sector.
Jupiter Electric Mobility plans to make a strong impact in the LCV market, using its experience in manufacturing for major companies like Tata Motors and Eicher. The company has partnered with Green Power (USA) and Log9 Materials to incorporate advanced battery technology, aiming to deliver high-performance electric trucks.
At the launch event, Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons Ltd, outlined the company’s vision for the EV market. He stated, "The SCV segment in India surpasses four lakh units each year, and a 25-30% adoption rate for EVs would create a one-lakh unit opportunity. While larger OEMs will lead the market, our focus will be on standing out through technology, reliability, and after-sales support."
Plans for Production and Market Expansion
The company is initially focusing on metro markets that have established charging infrastructure. The Pithampur facility in Indore currently has a production capacity of 8,000 vehicles per year, with plans to increase capacity as demand grows.
Vivek Lohia, Managing Director of Jupiter Wagons Ltd, stated, "Reaching a consistent volume of 400-500 vehicles per month will make scaling up much simpler. Unlike the railway industry, which involves heavy machinery and long timelines, EV production is mostly assembly-based, allowing for quicker expansion."
Jupiter Electric Mobility is taking a planned approach to expanding in the EV market. The company aims to introduce 2-tonne and 3-tonne electric trucks by the end of the year, further strengthening its presence in urban logistics and last-mile delivery. As the market shifts toward larger EV models, the company is working to offer a complete range of products to meet the growing demand.
