Battery Smart has been selected for the APAC Cleantech 25 list for 2025. Battery Smart is an Indian battery-swapping company. The APAC Cleantech 25 list has the names of top companies in the Asia-Pacific region that are driving forward clean technology in areas like battery development, energy efficiency, and waste reduction.
Recognized for Innovation and Impact
Battery Smart is one of only two Indian firms to receive this recognition, highlighting its role in transforming the electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure in the country. The selection was made after a detailed evaluation process. Criteria included innovation, scalability of the solution, partnerships, and investment performance. Battery Smart stood out for its practical and scalable battery-swapping network designed especially for electric two- and three-wheelers in India.
Rapid Expansion Across India
Using a partner-led model, Battery Smart has expanded its network to Tier 1, 2, and 3 cities. Local small businesses are invited to host battery-swapping points, allowing the network to grow without needing to build expensive infrastructure. Today, Battery Smart carries out more than 100,000 battery swaps every day.
Supporting Sustainability and Clean Transport
Since June 2020, the company has completed over 68 million battery swaps. These swaps have led to a reduction of more than 325,000 tonnes of CO2, according to company figures. In terms of clean mobility, Battery Smart’s users have collectively driven more than 2.27 billion electric kilometers. These achievements support India’s larger goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2070 and cutting down on the use of fossil fuels in transportation.
About Battery Smart
Battery Smart was started in 2019 by Pulkit Khurana and Siddharth Sikka, both graduates from IIT Kanpur. Battery Smart was launched with a clear mission to make EV adoption simpler and more affordable. One of the biggest hurdles for drivers in switching to electric vehicles is the high cost of batteries. To solve this, the company created a battery-swapping model, removing the need for drivers to buy batteries outright.
Instead, drivers can subscribe to the service and swap their discharged batteries with fully charged ones at various swapping stations. This will automatically reduce downtime and speed up vehicle use, allowing users to earn more in a day.
Replacing Outdated Battery Systems
The company noticed that a large number of electric rickshaws were still running on lead-acid batteries, which have short lifespans and take hours to charge. Battery Smart’s solution provides lithium-ion battery swaps, which are quicker, last longer, and are more efficient. This shift has improved the day-to-day operations of many EV drivers across India.
Driving Growth for Drivers and Small Businesses
Battery Smart says its swapping service has boosted incomes for both drivers and station partners. Drivers have collectively earned an additional ₹750 crores, while local partners who host battery-swapping stations have seen ₹175 crores in extra revenue. Interestingly, the company also highlights that a notable percentage of its users are female drivers, contributing to economic opportunities for women in the transport sector.
