Daimler Truck is the first European manufacturer to produce a series-production truck powered by liquid hydrogen.
Key Highlights:
The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), along with the states of Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, has approved €226 million (₹1,986 crore) to support 100 hydrogen-powered fuel cell trucks. This funding will aid their development, small-scale production, and deployment. The project underwent a detailed review by the European Commission.
Application and Funding Details
Daimler Truck filed an application for funding in 2021 to develop fuel cell trucks and small series customer deployment in long-distance transportation, as part of its efforts to decarbonize transportation with hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Daimler Truck will now receive about two-thirds of the total qualifying amount submitted in the IPCEI grant application. Daimler Truck will continue to invest significantly in the development of fuel cell trucks on its own.
Boost for Hydrogen in Freight Transportation
According to Karin Radstrom, CEO of Daimler Truck, the acceptance of funds for the development and limited series production of 100 fuel cell trucks is an important step forward for the use of hydrogen in road freight transportation. This support sends a powerful signal not only to Daimler Truck, but to the whole commercial vehicle industry.
Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport and Federal Minister of Justice, stated that "sustainable transportation with hydrogen-powered trucks is already possible today. Daimler Truck is the first European manufacturer to produce a series-production truck powered by liquid hydrogen, paving the way for the commercial use of hydrogen technology in road freight transportation. I am glad to announce that my ministry, along with Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate, will contribute 226 million euros to the project. With the deployment of the new fuel cell trucks, we are obtaining valuable insights on the future mix of motor technologies that will enable sustainable freight transport."
Production and Assembly
The funded project, established under the European Union's IPCEI (Important Project of Common European Interest) Hydrogen initiative, includes both vehicle and production-related activities. In addition to vehicle development and build-up, the funding will be utilized for feasibility studies on the hydrogen value chain, as well as investments in necessary production facilities and procedures in preparation for projected series production. The trucks are expected to enter customer operations by late 2026.
Key components for the fuel cell trucks will be assembled at various German production sites:
Advantages of Liquid Hydrogen
Liquid hydrogen offers several benefits:
In 2023, Daimler Truck showcased this technology when the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 Truck completed a 1,047 km journey on a single tank of liquid hydrogen during the #HydrogenRecordRun.
Dual-Track Strategy for Sustainable Transport
Daimler Truck is committed to CO2-neutral operations by 2039, as part of the Paris Climate Protection Agreement. The company focuses on both hydrogen-powered and battery-electric vehicles for different transport needs:
By combining both technologies, Daimler Truck aims to meet the energy demands of sustainable freight transportation.
