Mormugao Port Authority extends green incentives to trucks, aiming to reduce its 32,000-tonne carbon footprint through sustainable practices.
Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is taking significant steps to reduce its carbon emissions by focusing on greener transportation. After becoming the first port in South Asia to offer green incentives for ships, the MPA now plans to extend its eco-friendly initiative to trucks involved in cargo transportation.
Port chairman N. Vinodkumar announced that the Harit Shrey scheme, originally launched to incentivize ships that reduce harmful emissions, will now include trucks. This extension aims to encourage the use of trucks running on green fuel, further helping the port to reduce its annual carbon footprint of 32,000 tonnes.
"Acknowledging the carbon footprint is the first step toward managing it," Vinodkumar said. "We are expanding the Harit Shrey scheme to trucks to incentivize those using cleaner fuel."
The MPA is also shifting to cleaner energy with a 3MW solar power plant expected to be operational within the next few months. This will contribute to an immediate 10% reduction in carbon emissions. The port has plans to reduce its overall emissions significantly over the next three to four years.
The port’s modernization projects, valued at ₹1,152 crore, include building a four-lane connectivity project expected to be completed by November, along with the planting of 5,000 trees to boost green cover. A dome structure is also being erected to reduce pollution from coal stacks.
This initiative aligns with global efforts, including the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal to cut carbon dioxide emissions from the shipping sector by 50% by 2050.
By promoting sustainable practices, the Mormugao Port Authority is positioning itself as a leader in environmental responsibility.
