Key Highlights:
Nagpur is gearing up for a change in public transport with the introduction of a trolley-electric bus service, a first of its kind in India. The initiative, led by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), aims to enhance eco-friendly transportation across the city's 52 km-long Inner Ring Road.
Eco-Friendly and Innovative Transport Solution
The trolley-electric buses will operate along major routes including Katol Naka, MIDC, Hingna T-Point, Chhatrapati Square, Kalamna, and Kamptee Road. These buses will directly reduce carbon emissions, aligning with sustainable energy goals.
Features and Capacity
Each trolley-e-bus will consist of three interconnected units, offering a spacious seating capacity of 132 passengers. The buses will feature CCTV monitoring, air conditioning, standalone packaged snacks, and laptop holders at every seat, catering especially to students and IT professionals with night bus services.
Cost Efficiency and Government Support
It is expected that these electric buses will be 30% cheaper to operate than diesel buses. The initiative has received a substantial boost with the Maharashtra government allocating ₹150 crores for its implementation. Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, highlighted the cost-effectiveness and potential scalability of the trolley-electric buses, drawing from his experience with similar systems abroad.
Future Prospects
Following successful testing on Nagpur's ring road, these electric buses promise to revolutionize public transport infrastructure, offering a viable alternative for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridors across the country.
