•    CTU aims to switch all buses to electric by 2027-2028 for a cleaner city.

Chandigarh's public transportation system, managed by the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU), is about to get a significant upgrade. CTU is adding 100 new electric buses to its fleet. These buses are part of the government's plan to make transportation cleaner and greener.

Details of the New Buses

These new buses are different from the ones currently in use. They are called ultra-low entry (ULE) bus and are longer, stretching 12 meters in length. This makes them bigger than the existing electric buses, which are only 9 meters long.

How They Were Acquired

Under the 'PM e-Bus Sewa' scheme by the central government, 100 buses are being provided. Previously, electric buses were made available under phase II of the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) India Scheme by the central government.

The government ran a process to find the best company to supply these buses. The company PMI Electro won the bid by offering to operate the buses for Rs 61.8 per kilometer. This means they'll run the buses for a certain cost, and it's the lowest bid.

Benefits of the New Buses

The longer buses can carry more people, which is great news for passengers. They also have special features that make them easier to get on and off, especially for people with disabilities or older passengers.

CTU's Green Mission

CTU has big plans for the future. By 2027-2028, they want to replace all their old diesel buses with electric ones. This is part of their effort to reduce pollution and make transportation more environmentally friendly.

The arrival of these new electric buses is a step forward for Chandigarh's transportation system. It shows CTU's commitment to providing better service while also caring for the environment.

With these changes, travelling around the city will become easier, cleaner, and more enjoyable for everyone.
