Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently travelled from Washington to New York in a truck and had an open talk with the driver about the daily life of Indian-origin truck drivers in the United States.

He had previously taken a truck journey from Delhi to Chandigarh to hear about truck drivers' challenges in India. According to a press release issued by the party, the Congress leader went on a 190-kilometre "American Truck Yatra" from Washington DC to New York with driver Taljinder Singh Vicky Gill and his companion Ranjeet Singh Banipal, a journey that ended with a delicious breakfast at a restaurant.

During the journey, Gandhi observed that trucks in the United States are designed with the driver's safety and comfort in mind, which is not the case in India.

During a discussion with Gill about growing commodity prices, inflation, and Indian politics, Gandhi stated that no faith teaches one to spread hatred. Along the journey, they listened to Sidhu Moosewala's songs.

It was highlighted during the ride that while truck drivers here at home struggle to make ends meet with meagre wages and a record price rise, their American counterparts receive dignity for their labour with decent wages.

"There are many lessons to learn from the American truck industry in order to plan a new vision for the truck industry in India. Indian truck drivers are the lifeblood of the country’s logistics industry and deserve a dignified life as well," according to the statement.

They are practically in the forefront of 'Bharat Jodo,' and their growth is bound to have a beneficial cascading effect on the entire Indian economy, it added.

Last month, Gandhi traveled from Delhi to Chandigarh in a truck. The former Congress chief was seen in photos and videos sitting inside a truck, travelling with a driver, and conversing with drivers at a dhaba.
