The trial features different truck models, including the Tata Prima H.55S and the Tata Prima H.28 H2-ICE truck.
Key Highlights:
Tata Motors has started testing hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks in India, a move towards more sustainable long-distance transportation. The trials were flagged off by Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, who was officially launching them. Government officials and Tata Motors representatives were present for the event.
Government Support and Project Objectives
This initiative was funded by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to assess if hydrogen-powered trucks can work well for carrying goods. Tata Motors won the project tender. The company will also support building the infrastructure needed for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Leadership Insight:
At the launch, Nitin Gadkari said that hydrogen is the fuel of the future and can reduce emissions while making India more energy independent. He added that such projects will speed up the shift to sustainable heavy trucking. He also praised Tata Motors for leading the way in hydrogen-powered transport.
Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, said that the company is proud to lead India's shift towards cleaner, zero-emission freight transport. He added that the hydrogen truck trials continue Tata Motors' tradition of innovation while supporting the government's vision for sustainable mobility.
Trial Duration and Test Locations
The trial will last up to 24 months. This trial includes 16 hydrogen-powered trucks with different designs and load capacities. These trucks, using Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2-ICE) and Fuel Cell (H2-FCEV) technologies, will be tested on major freight routes like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar.
Hydrogen Truck Models and Features
The trial features different truck models, including the Tata Prima H.55S with both H2-ICE and FCEV technologies and the Tata Prima H.28 H2-ICE truck. These hydrogen powered trucks in India can travel 300-500 km on a single fill. These trucks come with driver-assist safety features to improve efficiency and reduce fatigue.
Tata Motors has been working on alternative fuel technologies like battery electric, CNG, LNG, hydrogen internal combustion, and hydrogen fuel cells. Earlier, the company introduced 15 Hydrogen FCEV buses in India as part of a separate project.
