Tata Motors is planning to start a pilot project for hydrogen-powered trucks in the first quarter of 2025, following the unveiling of the Tata Prima H.28 at the Auto Expo 2025.
The trucks will use hydrogen internal combustion engines and will operate on three routes for 18 months as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission pilot project. This collaboration with IOCL will help to gather data to improve both the trucks and the hydrogen fueling infrastructure.
Tata's Hydrogen Truck Models Unveiled
At the Auto Expo 2024, Tata Motors introduced its hydrogen truck range, including the Tata Prima E.55 S and Tata Prima H.55 S models. These trucks are part of the company's larger strategy to develop and deploy hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles across India.
Tata Motors’ Vision for Hydrogen Trucks
Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, shared insights during the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in Delhi. He highlighted the company's ongoing efforts, including the operation of 15 electric fuel cell buses with IOCL for over 10 months. Wagh emphasized that Tata Motors is preparing for both hydrogen internal combustion engine trucks and fuel cell electric vehicles.
The hydrogen-powered trucks will operate on three routes: Mumbai-Pune, Jamshedpur-Kalinganagar, and Mumbai-Ahmedabad. Wagh stated that the pilot project will help in gathering important data to refine the trucks and improve the hydrogen fueling infrastructure.
Road to Commercial Launch
Tata Motors is aiming for a commercial launch of hydrogen fuel vehicles within 12 to 24 months. The company is focusing on a bold transformation, emphasizing sustainability, safety, and the integration of digital and artificial intelligence technologies into its commercial vehicles.
Positive Outlook for the Commercial Vehicle Market
Wagh also spoke about the current state of the commercial vehicle market, noting the challenges faced this fiscal year. However, he mentioned seeing positive signs in various sectors and expressed optimism for the fourth quarter. He also acknowledged the government's strong support for the transition to electric vehicles and sustainability, citing various initiatives like FAME incentives and Production Linked Incentives (PLIs).
