According to officials, the Indian Army has decided to purchase electric vehicles (EVs) for select units and formations in order to comply with the government's overall policy of reducing carbon emissions.

According to the plan, approximately 25% of light vehicles, 38% of buses, and 48% of motorcycles in select units will be replaced with EVs in a time-bound manner.

Before finalizing the roadmap for EV induction, officials stated that this is being done to the requirements of the Army and the adaptability of EVs to various environments.

To support the EV ecosystem in army units, the necessary support infrastructure, including EV charging points, will be installed. There will be at least one fast charger and two to three slow chargers at these charging stations. The army also intends to phase in the installation of solar-powered charging stations.

According to reports, the current bus shortage will be resolved by purchasing electric buses for initial use by a few selected peace establishments, and a tender for the purchase of 60 buses and 24 fast chargers is expected to be issued soon. The Army will gradually incorporate more EVs.

The Indian Army organized a showcase of available EVs for Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in April this year, where manufacturers such as Tata Motors and Revolt displayed their models and briefed visitors on advancements in EV technology.

The EV drive has already begun in New Delhi, according to officials, and will soon be expanded to Lucknow, Pune, and Kolkata.

The Army is putting infrastructure in place to support the EV drive. It has built transformers with a sufficient load-bearing capacity based on the expected number of EVs per station, and it has installed charging stations in business and apartment building parking lots. Additionally, solar-powered charging stations are being developed.
