ZF Enhances Road Safety with New Commercial Vehicle Technologies

Based on the Highway Assist Lane Change (HALC) project, ZF has developed a system to prevent collisions during lane changes.

ZF, which has a good track record of developing systems for commercial vehicles that can make driving safer and lower the chance of accidents, has announced significant advancements in safety technologies for the industry. 

The global supplier provides a diverse product range to the commercial vehicle industry, ranging from individual components to comprehensive system-wide solutions. 

By exploiting cross-divisional technology transfer capabilities, ZF is also able to develop new advances in ADAS technologies, propelling safety system innovation to the next level.

ADAS Technologies and Safety Innovations

ZF claims that its ADAS technologies use sophisticated software and algorithms to determine whether objects in the vehicle's surroundings pose a hazard. Intelligent systems can also detect driver tiredness or inattention and identify the appropriate response, warning, or intervention.

GSR ADAS Technologies

ZF's comprehensive suite of GSR ADAS technologies includes a variety of sophisticated systems that combine sensors, software, and automatic braking. 

Cameras and radars can identify barriers and other objects on the road, such as other vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles, even when they are in blind zones, while also monitoring speed signs and lane markings. Tyre pressure systems ensure that the tyres are adequately inflated, lowering the chance of a blowout emergency.

Friction-Adapted ADAS

ZF’s friction-adapted ADAS uses sensors and a cloud-based database to estimate road conditions and determine traction availability. 

This system exchanges information between vehicles to anticipate road conditions ahead, enhancing the performance of advanced safety systems like Autonomous Emergency Braking System (AEBS), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Antilock Braking Systems (ABS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

Automated Lane Keeping and Lane Changing

Based on the Highway Assist Lane Change (HALC) project, ZF has developed a system to prevent collisions during lane changes. 

The system makes use of ZF's latest braking and steering platforms, OnGuardMAX, mBSP XBS, and ReAX, as well as an additional cabin camera that continuously analyzes driver attentiveness. The device can also detect whether there is a vehicle in front and maintain a safe distance.

When changing lanes, the technology monitors traffic in the following lane while ensuring the driver remains attention to road conditions. When the driver wishes for a lane change, the system ensures that all relevant checks, such as mirror checks, are completed before signaling.

If yes, the system allows the truck to change lanes automatically after the turn signal is triggered. If one or both of these conditions are not met, the system will generate an alarm, preventing the movement.

Truck-Trailer Link

ZF continues to lead the pace in trailer technologies, introducing an improved truck-trailer interface that allows for safer high-speed data and image transfer in real time. 

Functional safety is part of the design. With the truck trailer link, many side and reverse cameras on the trailer allow the driver to see blind spots surrounding the trailer. The system has improved reversing assistance, including automated braking.
