In the first quarter of FY2024, 300,099 electric three-wheelers were sold in India, a 79% increase year on year, with Mahindra Last Mile Mobility leading the market in a field with over 450 players.
In a remarkable display of market resilience, Mahindra's electric three-wheelers have continued their strong growth trajectory from April to July, reaffirming the brand's commitment to sustainable mobility solutions. The surge in demand for these eco-friendly vehicles underscores the escalating global focus on reducing carbon emissions and embracing cleaner transportation alternatives.
The Indian electric vehicle market is on track for another record-breaking year in 2023, having surpassed 800,000 unit sales in the first seven months of the year. Given their affordability index in comparison to their far more expensive four-wheeled automobile and commercial vehicle siblings, the two- and three-wheeler sub-segments have been the movers and shakers of India EV Company.
In the first quarter of FY2024, 300,099 electric three-wheelers were sold in India, a 79% increase year on year, with Mahindra Last Mile Mobility leading the market in a field with over 450 players.
This remarkable growth showcases the escalating popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) among consumers, driven by factors such as reduced operating costs and a growing environmental consciousness.
Mahindra Last Mile Mobility (MLMM), which expanded its manufacturing capacity at the Haridwar plant in April with a new series for its Treo e-three-wheelers, currently sells six EVs: the Treo, Treo Yaari, and e-Alfa Mini for passenger transport and the Zor Grand, Treo Zor, and e-Alfa cargo for goods transport.
The e-Alfa Super passenger vehicle was added to the company's electric three-wheeler lineup in early August. After exceeding the first 50,000-unit sales in July 2022, the company's electric three-wheelers have reached the 100,000-unit milestone in less than a year, demonstrating the high speed of demand and the value of being a first-mover in the market.
In FY2023, MLMM sold 58,520 three-wheelers, an increase of 94.55% year on year (FY2022: 46.54%), of which 63% were EVs (36,816 units), an increase of 48% year on year (FY2022: 17,522 e3Ws), giving the business a market share of 14.6 per cent.
In fact, cumulative sales for the first four months of FY2024, at 24,261 units, are already 41% of total sales for FY2023, with eight months of the current fiscal still remaining.

The success of Mahindra's electric three-wheelers can be attributed to their alignment with the rapidly evolving urban mobility landscape.
These vehicles offer a cost-effective and emission-free solution for last-mile connectivity and short-haul transportation needs in congested urban areas. Municipalities and governments around the world are increasingly endorsing such sustainable alternatives to combat pollution and traffic congestion.
The electric three-wheeler sub-segment, which includes passenger-transporting e-rikshaws as well as cargo-carrying variants, continues to grow in the double digits as a result of sustained demand for passenger transportation as well as from last-mile operators for e-commerce, food deliveries, and other applications.
According to published data, the passenger-transporting Mahindra Treo is the best-seller in April-July 2023 with 8,719 units, followed by the e-Alfa Mini e-rickshaw (5,780 units), and the Zor Grand cargo EV (2,390 units).
Given the present sales pace for MLMM, particularly for its electric models, it can be assumed that the firm is on track for a record-breaking year of three-wheeler sales, both overall and for e-three-wheelers.
According to the government of India's Vahan website, which tracks retail vehicle sales in India, MLMM sold a total of 17,383 electric three-wheelers between April and July 2023.
While legacy players have yet to pose a significant threat to MLMM's EVs, non-SIAM members such as YC Electric (13,148 units) and Saera Electric Auto (9,002 units) are the second-and third-ranked e-three-wheeler OEMs in India.
Another driving force behind the surge in electric three-wheeler demand is their commercial viability for fleet operators. These vehicles offer an attractive value proposition in terms of reduced fuel and maintenance costs.
Businesses that rely on intra-city logistics are increasingly recognizing the financial benefits of transitioning their fleets to electric alternatives.
While Mahindra's electric three-wheelers are riding the wave of success, there are still challenges to address. Range limitations, charging infrastructure gaps, and higher upfront costs remain concerns for potential buyers. However, as technology advances and economies of scale come into play, these challenges are likely to diminish.
The growth of Mahindra's electric three-wheelers in the April-July period signifies a larger shift towards sustainable transportation solutions. As governments, businesses, and consumers continue to embrace electric mobility,
Mahindra's commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle space positions them as key players in shaping the future of urban transportation. The remarkable growth in sales also underscores the increasing awareness of environmental impact and the willingness to make conscientious choices for a greener tomorrow.
