What do you mean by Electric Truck?

Basically, Electric Trucks are a subset of electric vehicles (EVs) that are designed primarily for commercial transportation, cargo delivery, and other industrial applications. Unlike traditional trucks with internal combustion engines (ICE), electric trucks rely on battery electric technology.

Electric Trucks are a subset of electric vehicles (EVs). As the emphasis on sustainable and environmentally friendly methods rises, E-Trucks are becoming more widespread in the logistics, freight, and transportation industries, providing an innovative approach to meeting cargo transportation demands.

These Electric Trucks are substantially different from regular diesel-powered trucks since they run on batteries. This means that instead of an internal combustion engine, Electric Trucks have one or more electric motors powered by massive battery packs mounted within the vehicle.

Electric Trucks are often designed to be similar to regular trucks in size and weight capacity but lack the traditional engine, exhaust, and fuel systems.

This enables a unique structure that maximizes space and efficiency. Electric trucks may look like regular trucks on the outside, but without a traditional engine, they often run much quieter.

Types of Electric Vehicles in India

There are four types of electric vehicles:

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV):
•    These run entirely on electricity.
•    They don't use any fuel.
•    BEVs are the most efficient type of electric vehicle.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV):
•    Uses both a fuel engine and an electric motor.
•    The fuel engine can also serve to charge the battery when needed.
•    Not as efficient as fully electric or plug-in hybrids.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV):
•    It employs both a fuel engine and an electric motor, with the option to plug in and charge the battery from an external power source.
•    More efficient than regular hybrids but less than fully electric vehicles.

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV):
•    Generates electricity using chemical reactions, usually with hydrogen.
•    As a byproduct, they only emit water vapor.
•    Efficient and environmentally friendly.

Each type of electric vehicle has its benefits and level of efficiency, with BEVs being the most efficient overall.

Advantage of Electric Trucks

Here are a few advantages of Electric Trucks:

Environmental Benefits - Electric trucks produce zero tailpipe emissions, significantly reducing air pollution and contributing to cleaner cities.

Lower Operating Costs - Electricity is generally cheaper than diesel, and electric trucks have fewer moving parts, resulting in lower maintenance costs.

Government Incentives - The Indian government offers various subsidies and tax incentives for purchasing electric vehicles, making them more affordable.

No noise pollution: Electric vehicles may operate silently because there is no engine. There is no engine, which means no noise. The electric motor runs so quietly that you have to peep into your instrument panel to see if it is turned on. Electric vehicles are so silent that manufacturers must add artificial sounds to make them safe for pedestrians.

Energy Efficiency - Electric motors are more efficient than internal combustion engines, converting more energy into movement and less into waste heat.

Disadvantages of Electric trucks

Here are the few disadvantages of Electric trucks:

Higher Upfront Costs: Electric trucks cost more to buy compared to traditional diesel or gasoline trucks.

Limited Driving Range: They can't travel as far on a single charge, making them less suitable for long-distance trips.

Charging Infrastructure: There aren't enough charging stations, especially for long routes.

Battery Issues: Making and disposing of batteries can harm the environment.

Government Schemes for Electric Vehicles

The Indian government has set ambitious targets for the EV ecosystem by 2030, aiming to reduce the country’s dependence on crude oil and promote greener transportation options.

The Indian government has implemented several incentives and policies to promote the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country. Here are some key initiatives:

Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024

The Indian government has taken an enormous step towards boosting electric mobility by launching the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024. This plan, launched by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, intends to expedite the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) nationwide.

This upgrade comes as the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles (FAME-II) promotion scheme is expected to expire on March 31, 2024. However, it has been relaunched as the Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme 2024 and extended until July 31, 2024.

Duration: The scheme is in effect from April 1, 2024, to July 31, 2024.
Budget: It has a total outlay of ₹500 crore.
Targeted Vehicles: EMPS 2024 primarily focuses on promoting the use of electric two-wheelers (e-2W) and three-wheelers (e-3W).
Eligible categories include:
•    Two-Wheelers (e-2W): Both commercially registered and privately owned.
•    Three-Wheelers (e-3W): This includes registered e-rickshaws, e-carts, and L5 category e-3Ws.
Incentives and Subsidies: The scheme provides demand incentives for e-2Ws and e-3Ws. To encourage advanced technologies, incentives will be extended only to vehicles equipped with advanced batteries.

PLI Scheme (Production Linked Incentive for Advanced Chemistry Cell Battery Storage)

Launched by the Department of Heavy Industry in June 2021, this scheme aims to boost the production of advanced chemistry cell batteries used in EVs. It encourages manufacturers to invest in battery technology and manufacturing.

The 2023-24 budget planned a 33% increase in capital investment outlay for the third year in a row, to Rs. 10 lakh crore, or 3.3% of GDP. This significant increase in recent years is critical to the government's efforts to boost development potential and create jobs.

Battery Swapping Policy

The government is exploring battery-swapping solutions to address range anxiety and promote EV adoption. Battery swapping allows users to exchange their depleted batteries with fully charged ones at swap stations. The model promises future reductions in battery prices, which can accelerate EV adoption.

Swapping eliminates concerns related to range limitations. Recently, Piaggio Vehicles Unveils Battery Subscription Model for Electric Three-Wheelers. Piaggio Vehicles introduces the 'Battery Subscription Model' for Apé Elektrik electric three-wheelers.

Duty Reduction on Electric Vehicles

The government has reduced the Goods and Services Tax (GST) component on EVs to 5%, making them more affordable for consumers.

Special E-mobility Zones

Some cities are creating dedicated zones for EVs, providing charging infrastructure and other facilities to encourage their use.

These incentives aim to make EVs more accessible, reduce pollution, and contribute to a sustainable future for transportation in India. If you’re considering purchasing an electric vehicle, these policies can significantly impact your decision-making process.
