Tata Motors is developing innovative H2ICE commercial vehicles to promote greener transportation in India and Ashok Leyland has made history by unveiling India's first hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE) powered heavy-duty truck.
Tata Motors displayed a wide range of commercial vehicle concepts at Auto Expo 2023 earlier this year, including the flagship Prima tractor, which is available in two variants.
Tata Motors has reached a milestone in the hydrogen-powered transportation segment with the inauguration of two new Research and Development (R&D) plants in Pune, Maharashtra.
The unveiling ceremony featured an engine test cell dedicated to developing hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) and infrastructure for storing and dispensing hydrogen fuel, all of which are required for fuel cells and H2ICE vehicles.
Tata Motors displayed a wide range of commercial vehicle concepts at Auto Expo 2023 earlier this year, including the flagship Prima truck, which is available in two variants: one powered by a hydrogen internal combustion engine and the other by fuel cell technology, a move that the company says is intended to demonstrate its commitment to green mobility.
"We believe hydrogen is the future's fuel, particularly for commercial vehicles. We are beginning a new age of scientific discoveries and advancements in green mobility with the launch of these dedicated R&D centres to develop and indigenize hydrogen propulsion technology," said Girish Wagh, executive director of Tata Motors.
This is a celebration moment for the company as they have created a hydrogen-based internal combustion engine development facility and the associated infrastructure for fuel storage and dispensing at our engineering research centre.

The Ashok Leyland H2ICE truck is powered by a hydrogen engine while retaining the general architecture of a normal diesel powerplant. As per the company statements, the Ashok Leyland H2ICE truck has a loading capacity of 19-35 tons and a range of 400 kilometres with a full tank of hydrogen.
