Tata Motors' all-new electric double-decker will compete with the Switch EiV22 double-decker electric bus, which is already in operation in some Indian cities such as Mumbai.

Tata Motors, known for its commitment to environmental sustainability and cutting-edge technology, has been a frontrunner in the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. The leaked patent images unveil their vision for a double-decker electric bus that merges elegance with eco-friendliness, catering to the growing demand for efficient and green public transport solutions.

According to a leaked patent image, Tata Motors appears to be working on a fully electric double-decker bus. Tata Motors' all-new electric double-decker will compete with the Switch EiV22 double-decker electric bus, which is already in operation in some Indian cities such as Mumbai.

What does the patent image depict for Tata's electric double decker bus?

The patent image that has appeared online depicts the bus's basic design. It has the appearance of a modern double-decker bus, with rounded corners, huge windows, and front and rear glass. The nose is upright, with a flat front and some design elements.

There isn't much information available about the platform or powertrain, but it's safe to assume that the underpinnings of this double-decker bus will be based on a strengthened version of Tata's existing single-decker electric bus platform, similar to Ashok Leyland's Switch EiV22 electric double-decker bus. The patent image does not specify the length of the forthcoming e-double decker bus, although Switch Mobility's version in operation with BEST is 9 meters long.

Although technical specifications remain undisclosed, industry experts speculate that Tata's double-decker EV bus might feature state-of-the-art battery technology, offering a substantial range on a single charge. This would be a crucial factor in addressing range anxiety concerns and making the bus a viable option for various public transit routes.

Mumbai need 900 electric double-decker buses.

BEST, the city's public transportation agency, has announced a need for 900 fully electric double-decker buses. Switch Mobility, which is owned by Ashok Leyland, is providing 200 of these units, with roughly 12 already in service and more on the way.

The remaining 700 buses were meant to be supplied by a brand called Causis E-mobility, however, the order was recently terminated, and the firm was banned by BEST for failing to produce 700 units of buses.

BEST recently issued a tender for 700 e-double-decker buses and another 50 with open deck and AC in the bottom deck, with Switch Mobility being the sole bidder so far. According to sources, Tata Motors may submit a bid with its own version of the e-double-decker bus. BEST already has a wet-leased fleet of Tata EV buses in both 9-meter and 12-meter body designs.

Tata's move into the double-decker electric bus segment signals the company's dedication to diversifying its electric vehicle portfolio. As cities around the world seek to reduce emissions and create cleaner urban spaces, innovative public transportation solutions like this could play a pivotal role in achieving these goals.

The leaked patent images have generated anticipation and excitement, as the world envisions a future where stylish, energy-efficient double-decker electric buses glide through city streets, reducing pollution and redefining public transportation.
