Agriculture Overview

India now ranks second in agricultural output worldwide. Agriculture is one of India's most important economic sectors, contributing significantly to the country's overall socioeconomic development. It employs over 64 per cent of the labour force, generates nearly 27.4 per cent of GDP, and accounts for approximately 18 per cent of the country's exports. It provides the majority of items used by the non-agricultural sector as well as raw materials for a big portion of the industry.

India's Cultivation Season

There are three types of agricultural seasons. Seasons of crop production include the Kharif crop, the Rabi crop, and the Zaid crop. Kharif crops are planted at the start of the monsoon season, and kharif crops are harvested from September to October.

Techniques may differ from one farmer to the next and from one location to the next, but the fundamentals remain the same. Cash crops in India are classified according to the seasons as Rabi, Kharif, and Zaid crops.

Rabi Crops - These are winter crops. Rabi crops are planted at the start of the winter season and bloom in the spring. Wheat, jower, gram, linseed, rapeseed, and mustered are the most important Rabi crops.

Kharif crops- These are monsoon-sown crops such as rice, jowar, bajra, soybean, sugarcane, legumes, and so on.

Zaid Crops - These are summer crops such as pumpkin, bitter gourd, watermelon, cucumber, muskmelon, and so on. During the summer, rice, Mainz, and groundnuts are grown naturally.
