His father, Naval Tata, was the adopted son of Ratanji Tata, the son of Jamsetji Tata. His mother, Sooni Tata, was the niece of Jamsetji Tata. Ratan Tata had a turbulent childhood, as his parents divorced when he was 10 years old. He was raised by his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, who instilled in him the values of dignity, integrity, and compassion.

Educational Pursuits-

Ratan Tata was a bright and curious student, who had a keen interest in architecture and aviation. He studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai, the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, and the Riverdale Country School in New York. He then enrolled at Cornell University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1959. He also obtained a degree in management from Harvard Business School in 1975.

Leadership at Tata Group-

Ratan Tata joined the Tata Group in 1961, and worked his way up the ranks, gaining experience in various businesses, such as Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Chemicals, and Tata Industries. He became the chairman of Tata Industries in 1981, and the chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, in 1991, succeeding his uncle, J.R.D. Tata.

Legacy and Contributions-

Ratan Tata retired as the chairman of the Tata Group in 2012, and handed over the reins to Cyrus Mistry. However, he returned as the interim chairman in 2016, after Mistry was ousted by the board of directors. He finally stepped down in 2017, and appointed Natarajan Chandrasekaran as his successor. In addition to this, he continues to serve as the chairman emeritus of the Tata Group, and the chairman of the Tata Trusts.

Ratan Tata is also an avid investor and mentor, who has backed several startups and entrepreneurs in India and abroad. He has invested in over 30 startups, such as Ola, Snapdeal, Paytm, Zomato, and Urban Ladder, among others. He is also a trained pilot, who loves to fly planes and helicopters.
