The Kia PV5 First Modular Electric Van Passenger model offers flexible seating with multiple layout options.

Key Highlights:

  • Kia unveiled the PV5, a mid-sized Car Derived Van (CDV) and the first model under its PBV strategy.
  • PV5 van comes in Passenger, Cargo, and Chassis Cab versions.
  • Kia's PBV strategy focuses on product, manufacturing, and software, with features like an Android-based infotainment system.
  • Specialized models include Crew, Wheelchair Accessible, and Cargo versions with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality.
  • The PV5 offers modular storage, advanced tech, and a 400 km range.

Kia Corporation introduced the new PV5 at the 2025 Kia EV Day in Tarragona, Spain, on February 28, 2025. The PV5 is a mid-sized Car Derived Van (CDV) and the first production model under Kia's Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy. It is designed with a modular structure, making it suitable for both business and personal use.

The PV5 is built on Kia's E-GMP.S platform, an electric skateboard-style design that allows configurations for different body types. At launch, it will be available in three versions: Passenger, Cargo, and Chassis Cab. More customized models will be introduced later. Kia's CEO, Ho Sung Song, stated that the PV5 combines an electric powertrain with a flexible design, reflecting the company's commitment to sustainable mobility.

E-GMP.S platform

Kia's PBV strategy focuses on three key areas: product, manufacturing, and software. The E-GMP.S platform uses an Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA), which standardizes parts like batteries and motors to make development easier and reduce costs.

Kia’s Flexible Body System allows different body components to be assembled based on customer needs. The PV5 comes in standard models like Passenger, Cargo, Chassis-Cab, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, and Family, with additional conversion variants such as Crew, Drop Side, Box Van, Freezer Box, Prime, and Light Camper.

Production takes place at Kia’s dedicated “EVO Plant,” using a mix of conveyor and cell-based systems. The company is also planning a conversion center for customized models, and all vehicles will be covered by Kia’s warranty. On the software side, the PV5 includes an Android Automotive-based infotainment system for better use. Kia is also working with Samsung Electronics to integrate Samsung’s SmartThings Pro IoT platform, allowing the PV5 to connect with workplace IoT systems.

Technical Specifications

All PV5 variants come with a choice of 51.5 kWh or 71.2 kWh NCM batteries, while the Cargo model also offers a 43.3 kWh LFP battery option. Power is provided by a 120 kW front motor generating 250 Nm of torque. The PV5 uses a cell-to-pack battery system, which improves energy efficiency by removing battery modules. With the 71.2 kWh battery, the Passenger variant can achieve a 400 km range and supports fast charging from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Kia plans to start PV5 sales in Korea and Europe in the second half of 2025, with availability in other markets by 2026. Conversion models will be introduced between 2025 and 2026, and pre-orders for the Korean and European markets will begin in the first half of 2025.

Variants of PV5

The PV5 Passenger model offers flexible seating with multiple layout options. The 2-3-0 configuration has two seating rows and a luggage space in the third row, while the 1-2-3 layout provides extra storage beside the driver. Kia worked with Uber to design this model for ride-sharing needs.

The PV5 Cargo is available in Standard, Long, and High-roof versions, with a maximum 5.1 m³ cargo capacity, enough for two Euro pallets. Its low cargo step height (419mm) makes loading easier. It also features an L-track mounting system (optional) for securing cargo and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality to power tools and equipment.

The PV5 Chassis Cab is designed for various conversions like Drop Side and Freezer Box models. It has a flat rear structure, side collision protection for the battery, and mounting brackets for cargo installations. Other specialized models include the PV5 Crew, which comes with built-in cargo securing options, and the PV5 Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) with side-entry access and a universal wheelchair belt fastening system.

Design and Interior Features

The PV5 follows Kia’s "Opposites United" design philosophy, combination of a sleek upper body with a sturdy lower section. It features signature lighting integrated into the A-pillar, along with black geometric wheel arch claddings and interchangeable bumper corners that enhance both style and practicality.

Inside, the cabin showcases natural-inspired colors such as Deep Navy, Dove Gray, Espresso Brown, Terracotta Brown, and Iceberg Green. The exterior comes in colors like Soft Mint Gloss, Lakehouse Gray Gloss, Frost Blue Gloss, and Steel Gray Matte (available in the Korean market).

The cabin design emphasizes modular storage solutions, including Kia’s AddGear system, allowing for easy customization with accessories. Technology includes a 7-inch instrument cluster, 12.9-inch navigation screen, Digital Key 2.0, and over-the-air update capabilities.
