The Michelin Air X SKY LIGHT is designed for commercial aircraft. The next tire dimensions will be determined by the priorities of airlines and aircraft manufacturers.

The new Air X SKY LIGHT tire is completely compatible with the PresSense linked tire solution, which was created in collaboration with Safran.

Michelin is introducing a revolutionary radial tyre technology designed for commercial aviation, at the 54th Paris Air Show. It is lighter than prior versions, with a weight reduction of 10-20%.

These significant weight savings is accompanied by improved long-term performance and also provide for lower maintenance and transportation expenses. According to Michelin, the Air X SKY LIGHT would have a 15 to 20% longer lifespan than its predecessor.

For aircraft, weight is a crucial constraint: every kilogram matters. This tyre will provide significant fuel savings and lower CO2 emissions.

On a Narrow Body aircraft, such as an Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, the savings on the main gear might be up to 75 kg. On Wide Body aircraft, such as an Airbus A350 or a Boeing 777, the savings on the main gear might be up to 250 kg.

As a result, for a fleet of 40 long-haul aircraft, the weight reduction in the tires alone may save USD 900,000 in jet fuel per year and represent a 3,400 metric ton decrease in CO2 emissions. The jet fuel savings for a fleet of 100 medium-haul aircraft would be USD 600,000, with a reduction of 2,200 metric tons of CO2 over a year.

Michelin began the design of Air X SKY LIGHT with a complete and standardized life cycle assessment for a tire from an environmental standpoint. Carrying a tire at a high altitude requires a lot of energy. Tires on landing gear can weigh anything from 50 kg to over 2,000 kg, therefore lowering weight is a key task.

Air X SKY LIGHT is the product of numerous revolutionary advancements in architecture, materials, and manufacturing methods. Its architecture and improved footprint increase the lifespan by 15-20% over previous generation tires.

These results are made feasible by the utilization of ultra-durable case materials, as well as cutting-edge hybrid cables and textiles. The increasing use of more sustainable materials aligns with the Michelin Group's goal of using 100% sustainable materials by 2050.

Finally, at the Michelin factory in Bourges, which is dedicated to the Group's aeronautics activities, unique manufacturing techniques have been developed. The new Air X SKY LIGHT tire is also completely compatible with the PresSense linked tire solution, which was created in collaboration with Safran.

The Michelin Air X SKY LIGHT is designed for commercial aircraft. The next tire dimensions will be determined by the priorities of airlines and aircraft manufacturers. A new dimension takes between 2 and 3 years to develop and is subject to highly demanding homologation and certification standards.
