Scania Unveils New 500km Range Battery-Electric Bus Platform at Busworld

The new Scania battery-electric bus platform debuted at Busworld in Brussels, as part of the company's entire e-mobility solutions spanning vehicles, services, and systems.

Scania has made a significant step forward in its electrification journey with the introduction of a cutting-edge battery-electric bus platform, which is a key component of its entire e-mobility solutions, which include vehicles, services, and systems.

The new Scania battery-electric bus platform debuted at Busworld in Brussels, as part of the company's entire e-mobility solutions spanning vehicles, services, and systems.

With the launch of low-entry 4x2 buses, the sustainably sourced and constructed batteries provide a massive energy storage capacity of up to 520 kWh and have been created specifically for heavy commercial vehicles, enabling a range of over 500 kilometers in excellent conditions.

The new platform will be introduced initially in low-entry 4x2 buses developed in collaboration with bodybuilder partners. These buses will be available in two performance levels: a four-battery variation with 416 kWh installed capacity and a five-battery variant with 520 kWh installed capacity. This amounts to a range of more than 400km for the former and more than 500km for the latter under ideal conditions.

Advanced Safety and Digital Functions of Bus

Northvolt and Scania collaborated to design and manufacture sustainable batteries, ensuring top quality and overall accountability. The new bus platform comes with more advanced safety and digital functions, one of the most sustainable heavy commercial vehicle batteries on the market, and the highest battery capacity and range.

Long-lasting batteries: In ideal conditions, high-capacity battery packs in 4-pack (416 kWh) and 5-pack (520 kWh) combinations provide a range of more than 400 km and 500 km, respectively. The batteries were designed and constructed in collaboration with Northvolt to ensure quality as well as environmental and social sustainability throughout the manufacturing process and supply chain.

For medium and heavy-duty operations: It is appropriate for medium and heavy-duty operations in city, suburban, and regional applications, and it is available in Class I and Class II. The low-entry 4x2 BEV has versatile specification options to match a variety of conditions and needs, making it ideal for bodybuilders. The bus is available in two chassis widths: 2,500 mm and 2550 mm, and the two axle gears enable ratio possibilities that function in even the most difficult topography.

Powerful Electrical Machinery: The new electric machine is more powerful since it has a newly integrated cooling system and an updated control system that fulfils the most stringent cyber security requirements. The motor gives a peak output of 300 kW and a continuous output of 250 kW.

Fast Charging: Scania's revised battery packs and battery management system allow for faster charging, and the new robust charging port placement is also more convenient.

Safety Features: Multiple advanced state-of-the-art driver assistance systems (ADAS), additional safety features, and strong protection from cyber security risks ensure the safety of the driver, passengers, and other road users. Powered by a new electrical system and Smart Dash instrument panel, the buses include new or upgraded digital functionality ranging from safety features and remote diagnostics to real-time maps and over-the-air capabilities.
