Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle maker, has taken a major step toward sustainability by introducing a fleet of electric buses at its Pantnagar plant. This initiative aligns with the company's goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
The Pantnagar facility, certified as a Zero Waste to Landfill site and recognized as water-positive by CII-GBC, serves as the perfect location for this green initiative. The new fleet consists of Tata Ultra 9m electric buses, built in India and designed for zero-emission operations. These buses will provide eco-friendly transportation for over 5,000 employees working at the plant.
The deployment of these electric buses, managed by TML Smart City Mobility Solutions Limited (TSCMSL), will help reduce carbon emissions by approximately 1,100 tonnes each year. Additionally, the fleet will be charged using electricity generated from a 16MW solar power plant, ensuring a fully sustainable operation.
Speaking about the launch, Vishal Badshah, Vice President and Head of operations, Tata Motors Commercial Vehicles, said, “The introduction of electric buses for workforce commuting marks a significant step towards achieving our aspiration of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. This initiative exemplifies Tata Motors’ commitment to integrating sustainability across our operations.”
The Tata Ultra EV 9m buses are equipped with state-of-the-art features, including advanced battery systems, regenerative braking, and Intelligent Transport Systems. These technologies ensure the buses are efficient, safe, and reliable.
This initiative builds on Tata Motor’s leadership in India’s electric mass mobility sector. The company has already deployed over 3,100 electric buses across 10 cities, which have collectively covered more than 24 crore kilometers with an uptime exceeding 95%.
