The rising demand for quick deliveries and e-commerce has made companies switch to electric vehicles (EVs).
Truck Manufacturers Partner with Amazon, Amul & Others to develop Electric Small Commercial Vehicles

Key Highlights:

  • Tata, Ashok Leyland, and Eicher has partnered with Amazon and Amul for e-SCVs.
  • Startups EKA and Omega Seiki are launching new e-SCV models for deliveries.
  • Bisleri and Amul are adding e-SCVs to cut costs and improve efficiency.
  • Tata Motors saw 40% higher demand for its Tata Ace EVs.
  • Eicher launched its Pro X e-SCVs and partnered with Amazon and ITC for deliveries.

The rising demand for quick deliveries and e-commerce has made companies switch to electric vehicles (EVs). These e-SCVs are expected to improve supply chains for products like groceries, medicines, and bottled water, while also lowering delivery costs.

Electric trucks cost about one-third of what diesel-powered vehicles do to operate. Many multinational companies are also setting goals to have zero-emission fleets by 2030. India’s top truck manufacturers, like Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, and Eicher Motors, are partnering with major companies such as Amazon, Bisleri, Blinkit, and Amul to make electric small commercial vehicles (e-SCVs).

Startups like EKA Mobility and Omega Seiki are also joining the trend, planning to launch nearly a dozen new e-SCV models soon. Big brands like Bisleri and Amul are adding electric vehicles to their fleets for the first time. This will help them deliver essential products like bottled water and dairy more efficiently.

Tata Motors Leads the Market with Growing Demand

Tata Motors, India’s largest commercial vehicle maker, has seen a 40% increase in demand for its electric Tata Ace SCV in the first nine months of this financial year. To meet this growing demand, Tata Motors plans to launch two more variants of the Tata Ace EV. Girish Wagh, Executive Director at Tata Motors, shared, “We’ve added 10 new corporate customers last quarter, bringing the total to 70. We’re also working with government and retail customers to improve last-mile delivery.”

Eicher Motors Enters the Electric SCV Market

Eicher has partnered with Amazon to roll out up to 1,000 zero-emission electric trucks over the next five years for Amazon’s delivery operations. The company has also signed an agreement with ITC to supply 100 EVs for mid-mile deliveries.

Eicher Motors has launched its Pro X range of electric small commercial vehicles (e-SCVs), developed with input from drivers and logistics companies. Vinod Aggarwal, Managing Director of VECV, highlighted that last-mile delivery vehicles play a key role in India’s move to EVs. "These vehicles travel short distances but are used frequently, which leads to big cost savings for operators," he said.

Benefits of Electric SCVs

Electric SCVs are around 50% more expensive than diesel models, but their lower running costs make them a smart choice. On average, electric vehicles are 3.5 to 4 times cheaper to operate than diesel trucks. Industry experts say these savings can make up for the higher price if the vehicles cover 80-90 km daily.

The move to electric SCVs is set to change India’s logistics industry. With more corporate partnerships and new EV models being introduced, last-mile deliveries will become faster and more efficient. As businesses invest in sustainable transportation, electric SCVs are expected to play a major role in shaping the future of urban logistics.

Many companies are switching to electric trucks because they want faster and more affordable deliveries.
