PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

In a groundbreaking initiative to promote sustainable energy and electric vehicle (EV) usage, the government has introduced a solar panel subsidy scheme that allows EV owners to charge their vehicles at no cost. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce carbon emissions and make renewable energy sources more accessible to the public.

Sales of electric vehicles in the country are constantly increasing. At the same time, power demand is steadily increasing. Simultaneously, the cost of electricity is increasing daily, raising the expense of operating the vehicle. This is why the demand for solar charging for vehicles is steadily increasing.

In response to this need, the Indian government is implementing several solar projects. If you apply for these programs and install solar panels, you can charge your electric vehicle for free. This will directly lower the cost of operating. Let's discuss this scheme in detail.

As the world moves towards sustainable energy solutions, India takes a significant step forward with the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a visionary government initiative aimed at providing free electricity to Indian households through the installation of solar panels. As people around the country prepare to switch to solar energy to receive free electricity, there's another factor to consider: electric vehicles (EVs) and three-wheelers

This initiative not only provides free electricity to residences, but it also allows EV owners to charge their vehicles for free, increasing the appeal of switching to electric mobility. This combination of solar panel subsidies and free charging for electric vehicles has the potential to change energy consumption and mobility in India.

Let's look deeper into how this program connects renewable energy and sustainable mobility, providing an ideal solution for a better future.

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a government project aimed at providing free electricity to Indian families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced the initiative on February 15, 2024. The initiative would give houses with a rebate for installing solar panels on their roofs. The subsidy will pay for up to 40% of the cost of the solar panels.

The plan is anticipated to benefit one crore households in India. It is projected that the initiative will save the government Rs. 75,000 crore per year on electricity bills. Your monthly electricity usage is the most important factor in determining the best rooftop solar arrangement for your home.

If your household consumes between 0 and 150 units per month, a 1 to 2 kilowatt solar plant should be enough. This configuration often includes subsidy support ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹60,000.

Upgrading to a 2 to 3 kilowatt system is advised for individuals consuming 150 to 300 units per month. Subsidies range from ₹60,000 to ₹78,000.

If your monthly electricity use surpasses 300 units, consider installing a solar plant over 3 kilowatts, with subsidies starting at ₹78,000. By adjusting your solar capacity to your energy requirements,

Matching your solar capacity to your energy needs allows you to maximize both clean energy and potential financial rewards.

Benefits of PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

Free Electricity for Homes: Families will get electricity without paying any bill, which helps save money.

Lower Costs for the Government: The government doesn't have to spend as much on electricity, which leaves more money for other important things.

More Renewable Energy: Using solar panels, we rely less on non-renewable energy sources like coal or fuel, which is better for the environment.

Less Pollution: Since we're using more renewable energy, there's less pollution in the air from burning fossil fuels.

Eligibility Criteria of PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana

Indian Citizen: Only citizens of India can benefit from this program.

Own a Suitable Roof: You need to have a house with a roof that can support solar panels.

Have a Valid Electricity Connection: You should already be connected to the electricity grid.

No Previous Subsidies: If you've already received subsidies for solar panels, you can't get it again through this program.

How Electric Vehicles Fit into the Picture

For electric vehicle owners, the scheme presents an opportunity to charge their vehicles using the power generated from their rooftop solar panels. This not only eliminates fuel costs but also reduces the dependency on the grid, leading to substantial savings in the long run.

If you have an electric vehicle (EV) or are looking to buy one, you may have already explored the benefits of using solar panels to charge it. By doing this, you may reduce both your electricity expenses and the environmental effect of your vehicle.

Can you use solar energy to charge your electric vehicle?

You can connect a solar PV panel system with an inverter to a standard EV charger to charge the vehicle's battery straight from solar electricity.

However, the amount of power generated by a PV system varies depending on the season and weather. On cloudy days or during the winter when the days are shorter, you may need to boost the PV system's power with grid electricity to charge your EV to the level you want.

Even partially charging an EV with solar is a sustainable and cost-effective choice because it uses less fossil fuels and uses less power from the grid.

Larger EV batteries often require more PV panels to provide enough power for charging, so if you want to install a PV system only for charging the vehicle, consult an expert to ensure you get the proper system for your needs.
