In this article, we will explore some of the top safety features that you must look for in modern trucks.

Blind Spot Detection systems use sensors to identify vehicles in the truck's blind spots, providing the driver with visual or audible alerts to avoid accidents during lane changes or turns. In this article, we will discuss some of the most important truck safety features.

When it comes to selecting a modern truck, safety should be a top priority. Whether you're a professional truck driver or a recreational user, having the right safety features can greatly enhance your driving experience and protect you and your goods in the event of an accident. In this article, we will explore some of the top safety features that you must look for in modern trucks and discuss why they are essential considerations when purchasing a new commercial truck.

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

Modern trucks often come equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) that use cutting-edge technology to enhance safety on the road. These systems include features such as adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. ADAS helps drivers by providing alerts and even intervening if necessary to prevent or mitigate accidents.

Blind Spot Detection systems use sensors to identify vehicles in the truck's blind spots, providing the driver with visual or audible alerts to avoid potential accidents during lane changes or turns.

The Lane-Keeping Assist feature detects lane lines with sensors and informs the driver if the vehicle drifts out of its lane without signalling. In some circumstances, it can even aid with steering to maintain the vehicle in its lane.

Adaptive cruise control, also known as active cruise control, autonomous cruise control, smart cruise control, and radar cruise control, is a type of adaptive cruise control. On the front grille of the vehicle, there is a radar sensor that detects how close or far the vehicle in front is.

The automobile will "adapt" its cruise control speed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead by sensing this distance. Drivers can set the interval from the steering wheel to determine how near (or far) they wish to be to the vehicle in front of them. In traffic, ACC will apply the brakes based on the distance specified by the driver.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

Electronic Stability Control is a crucial safety feature that helps drivers to maintain control over trucks in challenging road conditions or during emergency maneuvers. ESC uses sensors to detect if the vehicle is veering off and automatically applies individual brakes to specific wheels or reduces engine power to help the driver regain control.

This feature significantly reduces the risk of rollovers and loss of control incidents. In crucial driving circumstances, electronic stability control systems use automatic computer-controlled braking of individual wheels to help the driver in keeping control of the vehicle. ESC aids in the prevention of a vehicle "spinning out" or "plowing out" due to a loss of road traction caused by slipping wheels.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

The Anti-lock Braking System is designed to prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking, allowing the driver to maintain steering control while stopping the truck quickly and efficiently. ABS reduces the risk of skidding and improves stopping distances, particularly on slippery surfaces.

This feature is especially important in large trucks that require more distance to come to a complete stop. Sensors will detect when your vehicle's tires begin to lock up. At that point, the vehicle will apply and release the brakes automatically to keep your tires from sliding. When your ABS is not working, a warning light will illuminate. When a sensor becomes destroyed or there is an issue with your brake system, the ABS system can malfunction.

If your machine is completely broken, you should make an appointment to have it repaired right away. Although driving without ABS is not strictly prohibited, it is considered risky, especially if you use your vehicle for commercial use.

Airbags and Occupant Protection

Truck manufacturers have made significant advancements in occupant protection by equipping their vehicles with multiple airbags strategically placed throughout the cabin. Besides driver and passenger airbags, side curtain airbags and seat-mounted airbags provide additional protection during a collision. Look for trucks with a comprehensive airbag system that covers various impact zones.

Rearview Cameras and Surround-View Systems

Parking and maneuvering large trucks can be challenging, especially in crowded areas. Rearview cameras and surround-view systems offer enhanced visibility, allowing drivers to see potential obstacles and pedestrians that may be not in direct line of sight. These features are particularly useful when reversing, parking, or navigating tight spaces, improving overall safety.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Maintaining proper tire pressure is crucial for safe truck operation. A Tire Pressure Monitoring System constantly monitors tire pressure and alerts the driver if any tire is significantly underinflated. By preventing underinflated tires, TPMS helps reduce the risk of tire blowouts, improves handling, and enhances fuel efficiency.

The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) in your vehicle is designed to alert you if one or more tires are considerably under-inflated, potentially resulting in risky driving conditions. The TPMS low tire pressure indication is a yellow symbol with an exclamation point that glows on the dashboard instrument panel in the shape of a tire cross-section (that resembles a horseshoe).

Conclusion

Safety should always be a top consideration when purchasing a modern truck. The advancements in technology have resulted in a wide range of safety features designed to protect drivers, passengers, and other road users.

Features such as ADAS, ESC, ABS, airbags, trailer sway control, rearview cameras, and TPMS significantly enhance truck safety and reduce the likelihood of accidents. When choosing a truck, carefully review the available safety features and opt for those that align with your needs, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.
